Google Business Profile AI Mode results now put more of Google's own profile cards into local search. Profound found that Google's citation share inside AI Mode rose 8.4 times from April 15 through June 30, 2026, driven almost entirely by Business Profile and Product Knowledge Panel cards. Home services was one of the five local-intent sectors most affected.
The original Profound study analyzed more than 32 million google.com/searchviewer instances. Search Engine Land and Search Engine Journal independently reported the same shift in July.
What Changed in Google AI Mode for Local Searches?
AI Mode increasingly inserts Google-hosted profile panels into local answers. Those panels can show hours, location, photos, and reviews without sending the searcher to a contractor's homepage first. Profound measured the strongest movement in hospitality, home services, restaurants, real estate, and healthcare.

Home services was one of the most affected categories
This was an observational study, not a Google ranking announcement. It shows that Google is sending more AI Mode citations to its own local and product surfaces. It does not reveal a new algorithm or prove that a particular profile edit will produce an AI Mode citation.
| Surface | What a homeowner may see | What the contractor controls |
|---|---|---|
| Business Profile card | Hours, phone, location, photos, reviews | Accurate fields, categories, services, media, responses |
| AI Mode answer | Shortlist, summary, local panel, supporting links | Clear business facts and useful source content |
| Contractor website | Service depth, proof, process, quote path | Content, technical access, conversion, tracking |
Does Google AI Mode Replace Your Contractor Website?
No. The profile may become the first touchpoint, but the website still gives Google and the homeowner the details a card cannot hold. Google's AI features documentation says a page must be indexed and eligible for a normal Search snippet before it can appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode.
A strong profile can confirm that the company exists and serves the area. Strong service pages explain how the crew solves the problem, what changes the price, which neighborhoods it serves, and what the homeowner should do next. Our Google AI search guide for contractors covers that website foundation in more detail.
What Should Contractors Update in Google Business Profile?
Google's local ranking guidance still points to complete information, current hours, accurate categories, review responses, and useful photos. It names relevance, distance, and prominence as the main local-ranking factors. The AI Mode study raises the stakes because a homeowner may see that information before reaching the site.
Run these six checks in order
Confirm ownership and access
Audit the revenue fields
Match the website
Replace stale photos
Build a genuine review habit
Test the homeowner questions
For a practical rollout, start with the trade pages closest to revenue. A roofing company might test storm damage, emergency repair, and replacement questions. An HVAC contractor might test no-cooling calls, replacement estimates, and indoor-air-quality questions.
How Should You Measure Local Visibility in AI Mode?
Use a small repeatable test instead of treating one screenshot as a ranking report. Pick five questions tied to booked work, test them from the service area each month, and record the businesses, profile cards, source links, and details shown. AI answers can change, so the pattern matters more than one result.
- Query setFive commercial questions tied to real services and locations.
- AI resultBusinesses named, profile cards shown, links cited, and facts surfaced.
- Profile dataViews, calls, website clicks, directions, and review activity.
- Business resultQualified calls, estimates, booked jobs, revenue, and source accuracy.
Visibility is only useful when the calls turn into work. Connect the profile and website to call and form tracking, then compare lead quality and booked-job rate. The contractor lead generation guide explains the larger measurement system.
Google Business Profile AI Mode FAQ
Can a Google Business Profile appear in Google AI Mode?
Yes. Google says Business Profile information can help products and services appear in AI responses. Profound also observed Business Profile cards appearing as inline panels for local-intent searches in AI Mode.
Does AI Mode use different local ranking factors?
Google has not published a separate set of local ranking factors for AI Mode. Its official local-search guidance still names relevance, distance, and prominence. The Profound study shows where AI Mode is sending users, not a new ranking formula.
Do Google reviews help a contractor appear in AI Mode?
Reviews can shape the profile card a homeowner sees, and Google says review count and positive ratings can support local prominence. No public evidence shows that one extra review directly causes an AI Mode citation, so focus on a steady flow of genuine reviews and useful owner responses.
Should a home service company focus on its profile or its website?
Both. The Business Profile can become the first Google-hosted touchpoint, while the website supplies detailed service, location, and proof content. Google also requires website pages to be indexed and eligible for normal Search snippets before they can appear as supporting links in AI features.
