Google rank tracking can be inaccurate, and October 2026 vendor reports give contractors a reason to verify sudden drops. Compare the affected service pages and queries in Search Console, check local results, and reconcile calls with qualified leads and booked jobs before changing your SEO plan.
A roofer seeing a “not found” alert needs to know whether homeowners lost access to the business or the reporting tool lost access to reliable data. Those possibilities call for different work. Keep the evidence for each one.
Why Are Google Rank Trackers Reporting Strange Results?
Three separate rank-tracking vendors describe collection problems. They sell tracking software, so read their observations alongside their commercial interests. Their findings establish a reporting risk; they do not diagnose your website.
In its October 10, 2026 study of collected Google results, Nozzle analyzed 27.5 million search results pages across 49 countries, with data through October 9. It classified 8.0% of collected pages since September 13 as “poisoned” under its method: fewer than half of a keyword's usual sites appeared, then those sites returned in a later collection. Those percentages describe automated collections. They do not measure lost contractor leads.
SISTRIX's October 7 explanation says some collected results differ from regular search results. It describes extra checks and retries that can delay keyword updates. SISTRIX says its top-10 rankings and Visibility Index remain reliable after those checks. Check a report's collection date as well as its position.
Ranktracker's October 7 investigation focuses on incomplete result collection. A tool may fail to find a site because it did not collect enough results to reach that site's position. That is a different failure from a complete page containing different results.
The practical overlap is unreliable or delayed observations. The claim that Google deliberately changes results to frustrate AI scraping is the vendors' interpretation. The sources here do not establish Google's intent or prove that every tracker is affected equally. This October 2026 evidence is also separate from Google's September 2025 removal of the num=100 parameter.
Does a Tracker Drop Mean Your Contractor Website Lost Rankings?
A tracker drop is a reason to investigate. It cannot, by itself, prove a search penalty, a loss of local visibility, or fewer booked jobs. A real ranking change and a collection problem can happen together. You need matching dates, queries, pages, devices, and customer outcomes to separate them.
Google's Search Console Performance documentation explains that results vary with time, place, device, and search history. Average position is an average of the topmost result for the selected scope. It is not the fixed position every homeowner sees. Use clicks, impressions, and page-level comparisons too; a sitewide average can hide a service page losing demand.
Keep website organic results, the Maps/local pack, and paid ads separate. A web ranking study does not prove your Business Profile or Local Services Ads stopped appearing. Our guide to connecting search visibility with leads explains why exposure, visits, inquiries, and sold jobs belong in separate columns.

Which checks should your team run first?
Save the alert and its scope
Compare the same pages and query groups
Check customer access in the served market
Reconcile the lead and job records
When Should a Contractor Change the SEO Plan?
If the tracker falls while comparable Search Console clicks, customer access, and qualified demand hold steady, ask for a collection investigation and continued monitoring. Avoid broad edits until stronger evidence identifies a page problem. Stable totals still warrant checking individual high-value services.
If the same service pages lose search clicks and qualified inquiries, investigate indexing, site changes, competition, and demand. A decline across those measures strengthens the case for action but does not identify the cause. Write down the hypothesis and the smallest correction that tests it.
If clicks hold steady but booked jobs fall, check call handling, form delivery, lead quality, estimates, and sales follow-up. If a tracking system fails, repair it before drawing a budget conclusion. Any temporary paid campaign should have a qualified-lead target and a cost-per-sold-job limit grounded in your own margins.
The same discipline applies when evaluating AI-search recommendations for contractors. Ask which customer problem the proposed change addresses, what evidence supports it, and how the team will check the result.
What Should Your SEO Agency Show You This Month?
Ask for a dated report with the affected service pages and queries, tracker freshness and collection limitations, comparable Search Console data, and your lead-to-job outcomes. Each proposed change should name the evidence, the person responsible, and the next review date. An unresolved measurement gap should be visible in the report.
